Silas Fallstich Photography bio picture

Artist Profile

I was born and raised in rural Southwest New Mexico. My backyard was an 800 acre wildlife refuge, being homeschooled this was also my classroom. My parents cultivated in me and my three siblings a deep appreciation for the outdoors and inspired my love of literature, engaging and challenging my vivid imagination. My childhood was spent outside exploring with my younger brother; one of my earliest memories is collecting arrowheads less than a mile from my home with him.

My appreciation of the arts didn't start until later in life, however I was always attracted to the light and composition of sunsets and unusual weather patterns. One of my favorite and lifelong pass times has been to watch the array of unending colors a sunset has to offer and the occasional sunrise after an all-nighter; however those memories are less vivid!

When I purchased my first camera I returned to my roots and used reading as a means of instructing myself in photography. I fully immersed myself in capturing the world around me, there was little that didn't interest me. I instinctively developed a strong taste for landscape photography, but as I grow as a photographer I am continually pushing myself to explore new genres...my nieces are a new favorite!

I have since traveled to Alaska and captured some of the most awe inspiring landscapes, wildlife, and natural wonders; there natural world has to offer. It was in Alaska that I discovered that no matter what object I am photographing I can make it reflect a piece of myself.

I'm currently residing in my home town of Silver City, New Mexico.  I hope that my photography can continue to improve and develop where I grew up.

For me, my greatest satisfaction has been to capture the world around me and share it with those I care about. My hope is that those that view my photography will come to know the places I have seen and captured and possibly come to know a little something about me; Silas Fallstich the photographer, writer, book worm, and jabberwocky artisan.

A Brief Excerpt About My Work:

My titles are often obscure and misleading. They tend to be a reflection of the moment that I captured the image, my emotions within that moment, and the landscape or object being captured. Sometimes I feel like my titles are out of tune with the emotion or energy within an image, however, the titles are a reflection of how I came to capture the image rather than a reflection of the composition within the image.

Themes play a huge role in my work. Most of the themes were established through no conscious effort, more from a composition standpoint. For instance the lines a train track creates has always caught my attention. Yet, I have never set out and said, "Today I'm going to capture some train tracks." I believe the most challenging thing to do in photography is to assess what the natural world is providing for you, on any given day, and make that suit your photography.

I don't like to put a direct interpretation on my work because I'm usually overly critical, also I believe I can never replicate how you're feeling or what experiences you bring to your interpretation. I want my work to be open for person interpretation. When you look at my images create them for yourself, rename them, create your own moment within each image. My main hope is that my images will create in others a desire to not only see the paces I've seen but also to help preserve these wonderful places.

A friend of mine once asked me, "When did you get into photography?" At the time I didn't have an answer but upon great reflection I have concluded the following.

"I never got into photography. Photography has been and always be a part of me. My desire to capture the world around me is ceaseless. When I un-clip my lens cap and put my eye to my camera there is a tingling in my fingers and an excitement that wells up in me that cannot be conveyed verbally. Without photography I would not be Silas."

The Beauty of Denali

This is a Red Fox captured recently in Denali National Park, Alaska. This picture is for Madison, she is a young photographer that I recently met. Madison if you keep taking pictures someday you will have much better captures than me :)

This is a young Grizzly Bear captured in Denali National Park, Alaska. This picture is for Josh who is also a young photographer. Josh is Madison’s older brother and like me Josh has an extremely active shutter finger. Keep taking pictures at lightning speed Josh. Thanks for brightening up my day with a couple of cool poses. I know I promised you a wolf but the bear was much better. I hope you guys enjoy :)

A Bit of Fun

Out on a hike a few days ago me and a friend found this playful ground squirrel. By the end of the photo shoot he had me posing! :)

Back in the 907

Back in Alaska for another summer… as I continue to grow as a photographer I become more aware of how lucky I have been to visit this place for not one but three summers. My hope is that this summer will yield many great memories and photographs. Here is the short beginning to a long summer :0))

SRAM Tour of the Gila Favorites

These are my two favorite images from the 2010 SRAM Tour of the Gila! It was an amazing race and I really enjoyed the entire experience but these two stand out to me the most.

SRAM TOUR OF THE GILA 2010

The SRAM TOUR OF THE GILA 2010 has made its way to my hometown of Silver City, NM once again. This is the first stage race or large event that I’ve covered. I hope to get some positive results from this effort. Please let me know what you think of my images via the “Guest Book” I always look forward to comments both positive and negative! Pictured above is Lance Armstrong, this is the second consecutive year that he has attended The Tour of the Gila!

Coyote Classic

On March 21 I got to cover the Coyote Classic Mountain Bike Race in El Paso, Texas. I had a great time. The mix of biking and desert landscapes made for some fun shots. Here are two of my favorites from the weekend. You can see the complete album on my “Biking” album or click here                            —-> http://www.fullframefotos.us/biking/ thanks for looking.

Waiting for May

In May I’ll be heading back to Alaska. In the meantime I’m living in Silver City, NM. Which is in the southwest corner of New Mexico about 100 miles east of Arizona. There is truly amazing landscapes, sunsets, weather and all around beauty here. However, I’m still waiting on May.

Returning Home

I recently moved from Austin, TX back to my hometown of Silver City, NM. I enjoyed Austin but my photography was suffering. I came to realize while in Austin that if I’m going to be any type of photographer it’s most likely going to be predominantly nature, landscapes and wildlife. I have been lucky enough to get a job as a reporter for a local newspaper and will be taking pictures for them as well. The more I progress as a photographer the more I realize how much I enjoy nature photography. Here is a little taste of what I’ve captured since returning to New Mexico. I hope you enjoy. You can see more of my New Mexico images under the Image Galleries, The West.

Discovery

I love the opportunity to explore  new places. However, one of the things I find truly refreshing is finding a way to create an adventure or a sense of newness to a place you know really well. I relish the opportunity or sometimes the mistake of finding a new nook or cranny within one of your favorite places that has been undiscovered. Kind of like discovering places you have already discovered. This picture is a tribute to that thought. One of my favorite places in Denali National Park is Savage River. This picture is taken looking backwards after a long days hike. I hope you enjoy.

Up Close

My philosophy in photography and for this website is for the full frame to be filled. For me every aspect of each image is important. Another underlying theme is the proximity to some of my subjects. What I mean by this is the up close and personal feeling that an image can give off when you’re up close. So close at times you’re bordering insanity. The following images are some of my favorites that represent the up close and personal theme. These images are meant, or at least for me personally, to create an energy and excitement because of the proximity to the subjet. The captures may not be perfect but they truly are up close and personal. They convey a different mood and have a different energy.
